Avionics Technician

Duties and Responsibilities

• Adjust, repair, or replace malfunctioning components or assemblies, using hand tools and/or soldering irons

• Assemble components such as switches, electrical controls, and junction boxes, using hand tools and soldering irons

• Connect components to assemblies such as radio systems, instruments, magnetos, inverters.

• Install electrical and electronic components, assemblies, and systems in aircraft.

• Interpret flight test data in order to diagnose malfunctions and systemic performance problems

• Lay out installation of aircraft assemblies and systems, following documentation such as blueprints, manuals, and wiring diagrams

• Test and troubleshoot instruments, components, and assemblies, using circuit testers, oscilloscopes, and voltmeters.

• Assemble prototypes or models of circuits, instruments, and systems so that they can be used for testing

• Coordinate work with that of contractors and other aircraft maintenance personnel.

• Fabricate parts and test aids as required

• Keep accurate and organized records of maintenance and repair work.

• Utilize drafting and design software applications to design avionics systems and modifications

• Set up and operate ground support and test equipment to perform functional flight tests of electrical and electronic systems.

Qualifications

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Preferable degree or certificate from an accredited two-year college, university or technical school in avionics maintenance or a related field , or equivalent military training, or prior OJT experience working as an avionics technician.

Professional Certification:

• FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanics Certificate, OR. previous experience in general aviation avionics and should be immediately eligible for FAA Repairman status.

Experience:

• A minimum of 1 year avionics experience in design, installation, and must be able to effectively work independently

• 1 year of Avionics experience, preferably as an installer working in a Mod Center, MRO, or Back Shop. Military experience also accepted.

• Will consider entry level grads with avionics college training programs.

• Will consider previous avionics experience in other general aviation shops.

Additional Desired Qualifications 

• FAA Inspection Authorization certificate

• Minimum 1 year experience in an FAA Part 145 Repair Station regulatory environment

• Mathematics - Using mathematics to solve problems, ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly

• Repairing - Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools

• Quality Control Analysis - Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance

• Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job

• Science - Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems

• Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems

Working conditions

 Western Plains Aviation performs maintenance primarily at its Greeley-Weld County Airport facility. Individuals considering employment with Western Plains Aviation must be willing to travel on occasion, work outside in inclement weather if needed, work overtime, and work on a weekends if necessary.

Physical/Mental Requirements

• Push/pull aircraft using tow bar into resting position with hangar without assistance

• Climb on and under planes maintaining balance without fear of heights

• Quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects (manual dexterity)

• Keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position (arm hand steadiness)

• Quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or aircraft/vehicle to exact positions (control precision)

• Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects (finger dexterity)

• Bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs (extension flexibility)

• Visually see details at close range

• Arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules

• Visualize how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged

• After taking something apart, be able to know exactly how to put it back together

• Remember the work that has been done or needs to be done on individual aircraft to effectively multi-task
